Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios announced that fans won’t have to wait much longer for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic. It’s slated to hit PS5 and PC on June 13th. However, an intriguing twist has surfaced—despite earlier anticipation, there’s now no talk of PSVR 2 support, leaving many in the gaming community scratching their heads.
At PAX West 2024, fans were treated to a tantalizing demo of the game on PSVR 2, hinting at an experience designed for both VR and traditional screens. Steel Wool Studios has a robust history, carving out a niche in VR titles since being founded in 2012. Bolstered by an early investment of $5 million from HTC, they’ve rolled out several successful VR games such as Hello Neighbor: Search and Rescue (2023), FNAF: Help Wanted (2019), and its follow-up, FNAF: Help Wanted 2 (2024).
Upon announcing the release date for the next FNAF installment, all references to PSVR 2 support vanished from their promotional materials. This includes the PlayStation Store page for FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, which, according to web archives, once hinted at support for PSVR 2 but has since been altered.
The last whisper of PSVR 2 compatibility was in a PlayStation update tied to the game’s release date announcement on February 12th, but that tidbit has also disappeared. Steel Wool hasn’t offered any hints on whether or when VR support might arrive. This also leaves PC users on platforms like Epic Games Store and Steam wondering if they’ll get a taste of that VR magic.
In pursuit of clarity, we’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for a statement, but have yet to hear back. Until then, we can only speculate whether this is due to a strategic timing adjustment for VR mode or another tactic entirely.
