You might not be ready to let go just yet, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is getting even more exciting updates next year. It’s the kind of enhancement that would entice even the most devoted fans to embark on their eleventh journey through the game. Meanwhile, I’m still trying to complete my first playthrough!
The news of this fresh content came via the game’s social media pages and a Steam blog post. Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t done with us yet; there’s still another major update on the horizon. Back when Larian announced they’d wrapped up major additions to the sprawling RPG, many of us thought they were moving on. But like the developers of Terraria and Binding of Isaac, they seem happily caught in a cycle of adding more.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has garnered quite a reputation—and not just because even three folks from the Vatican are playing it. While mods crafted by the community currently keep the game buzzing with life, Larian Studios is all set to deliver more official goodies.
Coming next year in Patch 8, which they’re adamant is the definitive update, we’ll see cross-play, a long-awaited photo mode, and 12 fresh subclasses. Photo mode has been on players’ wish lists forever, and cross-play is a delightful surprise making BG3 the ultimate game to share with friends across platforms. As for the new subclasses, get ready to reroll your characters yet again. The Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts among us are surely celebrating.
The integration of cross-play is a big deal, ensuring “full cross-platform progression,” and yes, cross-play too. You’ll be able to create and join lobbies regardless of the platform, though it’s still a bit murky if these can be publicly listed for random players to join.
Photo mode, arriving with an array of features, will include customizable camera and lens settings, scene modifiers like poses and facial expressions, post-processing effects, frames, and even stickers. With the creative and adventurous spirit of the community, it’s sure to be used in wild and unexpected ways—expect some chaos!
And then, the crown jewel of Patch 8 is the new subclasses. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming for each class, but for all the juicy details, you might want to dive into the official announcement:
- Bard – College of Glamour
- Barbarian – Path of Giants
- Cleric – Death Domain
- Druid – Circle of Stars
- Paladin – Oath of the Crown
- Fighter – Arcane Archer
- Monk – Drunken Master
- Ranger – Swarmkeeper
- Rogue – Swashbuckler
- Sorcerer – Shadow Magic
- Warlock – Hexblade
- Wizard – Bladesinging
Looking ahead, ‘stress tests’ are scheduled for January to not only fine-tune cross-play but also roll out another set of repairs alongside Patch 8. So, don’t be too surprised if the complete update doesn’t arrive until February 2025. Rest assured, we’ll keep you posted with all the latest as this patch develops.
