Summary
Team Asano is gearing up for several releases in 2025, which might include fresh titles or remakes of beloved classics.
There’s buzzing anticipation among fans for a potential new installment in the Bravely Default series and possibly a sequel to Live A Live.
Spearheaded by Square Enix, Team Asano, known for hits like Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler, has exciting plans for 2025. This news was shared by the studio’s head, Tomoya Asano, during a recent discussion about their future goals. Notably, the team is credited with developing the HD-2D graphics engine, seen in various Square Enix remakes, including the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. This fuels speculation that their 2025 schedule might feature either entirely new creations or updated versions of timeless games.
Back in June, a leak suggested that Team Asano was quietly working on a sequel. The rumor mill quickly pointed to a new chapter in the Bravely Default saga, last updated with Bravely Default 2 in February 2021. However, there’s also chatter about a possible follow-up to Live A Live, the successful remake of a 1994 classic. Besides these, Team Asano has crafted titles like the tactical RPG Triangle Strategy and the life sim Various Daylife. The latter, though, didn’t quite hit the mark, dimming its chances for a comeback.

In an end-of-year interview, Final Fantasy 16 game director Hiroshi Takai teases that he will be working on a new project in 2025.
In a chat with 4Gamer, translated by Gematsu, Tomoya Asano revealed his ambitions for 2025. He mentioned that Team Asano plans to “be putting out the various things we’ve been preparing” next year. Among these is the awaited release of remakes for Dragon Quest 1 and 2, styled in the same HD-2D aesthetic as the Dragon Quest 3 remake. Considering Asano’s emphasis on “various things,” it’s expected there will be more than just one release, with the Dragon Quest pair treated as a single project.
Team Asano to Announce Multiple Games in 2025
Following the Live A Live remake announcement in 2022, Square Enix stated that more HD-2D remakes were under development. Although Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D had already been unveiled, the first two games in the series weren’t mentioned at the time. That said, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to think more unannounced games might get the HD-2D makeover. Numerous classic Square Enix titles could benefit from this beautiful graphical engine, possibly making them part of the Switch 2’s 2025 lineup.
While Tomoya Asano’s plans are thrilling for fans of Square Enix’s classic JRPGs, it’s wise to remember his previous teases haven’t always led to immediate announcements. In February 2024, Asano tweeted teasing Bravely Default fans with a message that the team would likely reveal something about the series within the year. As the year wraps up with no news, it seems 2025 might finally bring some fresh developments to the Bravely Default saga.
