In a surprising move, Tencent has unveiled a new game for the PC called Light of Motiram, and it’s drawing quite a bit of attention—and not necessarily the good kind. If you’ve ever played Sony’s Horizon series, with its stunning post-apocalyptic landscapes designed by Guerrilla Games, you might find Light of Motiram strangely familiar. It’s not just a vague resemblance, but more like staring at a reflection in the mirror, raising more than a few eyebrows in the gaming community.
Is Tencent Walking on Thin Ice with Sony?
Polaris Quest, a Tencent subsidiary, is the developer behind this new title. They’ve labeled Light of Motiram as a “mechanimal-ruled open world” adventure. Players are thrust into a landscape dominated by immense machines after the downfall of civilization, fighting to survive amidst the chaos.
The second this trailer dropped, comparisons started flooding in, reminding many of the Palworld and Pokemon saga. If you missed that drama, Palworld drew heavily from Nintendo’s beloved Pokemon, resulting in a legal showdown where Nintendo took developer Pocketpair to court over patent rights infringement.
Gamers are buzzing with opinions, split between whether Sony should pursue legal action against Tencent given the striking similarities to Horizon. Some strongly believe Sony should hold Tencent accountable for what appears to be an obvious imitation, while others feel that taking them to court might be going a bit too far.
Media outlets have reached out to both Sony and Tencent for their sides of the story, but so far, silence fills the air. That said, it would be surprising if Sony chooses to remain passive. After all, doing nothing might set a risky precedent, leaving their treasured franchises vulnerable to future imitations.
