Soul Paint offers a virtual reality journey that blends 3D art with self-reflection. Crafted by the creative minds of Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, and narrated by the talented Rosario Dawson, it made its debut at SXSW 2024. The experience allows participants to explore their emotional landscape by drawing in a 3D space that feels almost otherworldly.
Designed to enhance self-awareness, Soul Paint uses body-mapping within a virtual environment. The creators have crafted it to encourage empathy and connection by letting participants share their emotional experiences with others.
During a trial at the NewImages Festival 2025, I tried it out for 20 minutes. It starts with a thought-provoking question: “Where are you feeling?” As I roamed this ethereal setting, the experience prompted me to translate my emotions into a physical form.
The process was soothing and introspective. Though my artistic skills are admittedly lacking, the activity allowed me to express what was inside. I could draw across my virtual self and, after the session, record a voice note to share with others if I wished. It’s an innovative approach to convey emotions beyond words.
Soul Paint serves as a reflective VR tool, offering a unique way to connect with others. While it’s limited in scope as a linear experience, it successfully fosters a sense of presence and personal expression. I’m hopeful that similar experiences will emerge in the future.
There’s no word yet on whether Soul Paint will be available for home use, but any updates will be shared as soon as they’re available.
