ININ Games has once again dipped into the treasure trove of TAITO’s gaming history, unveiling TAITO Milestones 3, a compilation brimming with ten iconic titles ready to be rediscovered by Nintendo Switch players. After initially delighting us with the first Milestones collection in 2022 and following up with a second installment in 2023, this series continues to captivate retro enthusiasts. As we venture into 2024, the third collection promises to deliver even more nostalgia-fueled excitement.
So, which gems have been selected for this latest edition? The list includes beloved classics such as Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Rastan Saga, Dead Connection, Cadash, Rastan Saga 2, Champion Wrestler, Runark, Warrior Blade, and Thunder Fox.
Let’s kick things off with Bubble Bobble, the legendary 2D platformer that debuted in arcades in 1986. Players guide two lovable dragons, Bub and Bob, on a quest to rescue their girlfriends from the clutches of Baron Von Blubba. By trapping foes in bubbles and then bursting them, players can rack up points and unlock power-ups. Although the game is renowned for its NES version, this collection showcases its arcade origins beautifully.
Following the success of Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 emerged just a year later. In this sequel, Bub and Bob are now un-dragoned heroes using magical rainbows as both weapons and platforms. Fans must climb and strategize to overcome the rising sea threat while facing off against Dark Shadow’s minions across the vibrant Rainbow Islands.
Rastan Saga brings a different flavor to the mix, offering a sidescrolling adventure where players wield swords to fight through epic tales of the Kingdom. As Rastan, the once and future king, players traverse six levels teeming with enemies and imposing bosses, picking up temporary weapons and power-ups along the way to aid their journey.
In contrast, Dead Connection transports us to a cinematic 1950s cityscape. Up to four players join forces against hordes of foes, reminiscent of iconic films like The Untouchables. It’s a cooperative experience, with dynamic weaponry and evasive maneuvers keeping players on their toes through single-screen levels.
Cadash distinguishes itself with a unique blend of platforming and RPG elements within a fantasy realm. Up to four heroes set out to rescue Princess Salassa from the evil Balrog before it can complete a sinister ritual. Players must conquer various levels and cunning adversaries to avert disaster and restore peace to the Kingdom of Dirzir.
As for Rastan Saga 2, expect even more mythic heroism. This sequel continues the legendary warrior’s story through mythical lands facing dark magic. Known as Nastar Warrior in North America, the game expands on the original by delivering intense combat and thrilling storytelling.
Champion Wrestler delivers adrenaline-pumping action as players step into the ring, choosing from eight wrestlers each with distinct stats and abilities. Compete to claim the championship in this 1989 classic, focusing on technique, speed, resilience, and raw power.
Moving to Runark, players embrace the role of a fearless ranger dedicated to protecting wildlife from ruthless poachers. Known as Growl outside Japan, this 1990 beat ’em up combines brawn and heart over seven action-packed stages, featuring not just fists of fury but grenade launchers as well.
From the Rastan Saga series comes Warrior Blade, released in 1991 but available outside Japan for the first time here. With large character sprites and captivating pixel art, the game features three heroes—Rastan, Dewey, and Sophia—to guide through branching paths. It’s a treat for fans of fantasy brawling.
Last but not least is Thunder Fox, a fast-paced run ‘n’ gun game from 1990. Faced with sprawling terrorism threats, players, as members of the anti-terrorism team Thunder Fox, embark on missions across land, sea, and sky. With its over-the-top action and uniquely named protagonists, the game delivers high-octane excitement.
TAITO Milestones 3 offers a diverse lineup, ensuring there’s something for everyone. It promises to be a fantastic way to celebrate gaming’s rich past, launching on December 10 for the Nintendo Switch at a price of $39.99—a fitting celebration of TAITO’s enduring legacy.
