Choice Provisions and Atari have teamed up to offer a fresh twist on a beloved arcade game with Breakout Beyond. This game brings a vibrant, neon twist to a classic format, offering players an engaging experience. Let’s dive into what makes this version worth your time.
Originally, Breakout was all about keeping the ball in play vertically as you chipped away at on-screen bricks. But in Breakout Beyond, that vertical perspective has turned horizontal, giving a new dimension to the gameplay. The goal is no longer just to clear bricks, but also to navigate each level successfully to reach the endpoint.
This game was initially intended for the Amico console, which has faced delays. Known initially as simply Breakout, it has now found its place among Atari’s innovative Beyond series, which revamps some of their classic titles. I previously reviewed Lunar Lander Beyond, which added a narrative twist to another iconic game, and I found it pleasantly addictive. Breakout Beyond takes inspiration from BIT.TRIP Flux, another creation from Choice Provisions, enhancing its visual and auditory appeal.
You can tackle Breakout Beyond solo or bring a friend along for the ride with its two-player co-op option. The game dynamically adjusts its audio and visual effects based on your in-game combos, providing an immersive experience that rewards your success. With 72 levels to conquer, each filled with challenges and special blocks that offer unique effects when destroyed, the gameplay remains thrilling and engaging.
Some standout power-ups include a protective shield, explosive blasts that clear multiple blocks, and a laser cannon that paves the way to the finish line. Additionally, a drill can attach to the ball to power through blockades, and the classic multiball feature spices things up by introducing chaos and increased scoring potential.
Each level challenges your abilities, but plenty of support options are available. You can use focus mode to slow down time, albeit at the expense of scoring, or invite a friend to help tackle levels together. There are unlockable modes like the Infinite Mode, where scores take center stage, and the 1976 Mode, a nostalgic nod to the original Breakout.
Breakout Beyond comes complete with a full trophy list, including a coveted Platinum trophy. You’ll need to showcase a range of skills, from mastering power-ups to achieving high scores in different modes, to unlock all trophies.
This updated version provides an exciting, horizontal take on the familiar arcade formula. It’s currently available on PlayStation 5 for $14.99, with a separate PlayStation 4 version offered at the same price. Whether solo or with a friend, Breakout Beyond offers a modern trip down memory lane with its classic yet fresh approach to arcade fun.
