Word on the street is that Ubisoft, the well-known French game publisher, is cooking up a new battle royale game meant to go head-to-head with Apex Legends. This upcoming title, which insiders refer to as ‘Scout,’ seems to have borrowed a few elements from the popular game by Respawn and EA. In fact, early visuals of the game closely mirrored those of Apex, and the characters reportedly bear a striking resemblance as well. Ubisoft’s development team has been working on this title for a while now.
The strategy here appears to be aimed at capturing players from Apex Legends. Recent admissions by Electronic Arts revealed that their game hasn’t been minting money like it used to, which Ubisoft sees as an opportunity. According to one source, Ubisoft believes that with Apex’s player numbers dwindling, there’s a gap they can fill with a fresh hero-based battle royale experience.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s debut in the realm of free-to-play battle royales. Remember Hyperscape from back in 2020? Unfortunately, it didn’t last much longer than a year and a half before closing shop. Plus, news recently emerged about the cancellation of XDefiant, another free-to-play shooter, slated to end in 2024.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Apex Legends isn’t resting on its laurels. Fans have something to look forward to with a ‘version 2.0’ on the horizon, expected to launch sometime after April 2026. Ubisoft clearly thinks there’s still plenty of excitement left in this competitive genre, and it seems they’re ready to dive back into the fray.
