Rec Room is a social VR platform that’s buzzing with exciting first-party games, perfect for diving into with friends or even strangers. The latest addition, called ‘Run the Block’, is making waves. It’s a lively nod to the nostalgic Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio from 2000.
Ready for some adrenaline-pumping action? ‘Run the Block’ hit the scene on December 11th and has already charmed its way into the hearts of over a million players. The game invites you to race and parkour against up to nine others through a sprawling urban landscape, much like Jet Set Radio.
Although you won’t find yourself zipping around on rollerblades straight out of the 2000s, you’ll still experience the thrill of running, leaping, and grinding along massive lines crisscrossing the city. Plus, you get to express yourself by laying down your own graffiti tags across the colorful scenery.
Over the past year, Rec Room hasn’t churned out many first-party releases, focusing instead on quality over quantity. The notable exception was their charming pet-farming sim, ‘My Little Monster’. This year, however, they’ve been enhancing the platform with a variety of branded content, such as the ‘Monster High’ avatar packs and items from Bungie’s shooter, Destiny.
More significantly, they’ve been busy improving the creator suite. This allows gamers to craft intricate worlds and even sell their own in-game assets, empowering users within the growing creator economy. On top of this, the introduction of full-body avatars earlier in the year has expanded customization options immensely.
November saw Rec Room becoming available on the Nintendo Switch, joining an already extensive list of compatible devices. Whether you’re on PC VR, any Quest headset, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, or PlayStation, you can jump into the action.
