Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software have hinted that a new DLC for Hogwarts Legacy could drop in 2025. Alongside this, fans got the confirmation they’ve been waiting for: Hogwarts Legacy 2 is indeed underway. Given the sweeping success of the original, the sequel feels like a given, but the DLC’s long-awaited appearance raises a few eyebrows regarding its timing.
Ever since the game launched, Harry Potter enthusiasts have been keenly anticipating a DLC. But as two years ticked by with radio silence, many began to question whether it would ever arrive. Releasing a DLC so long after the initial game’s launch is unconventional and risks dwindling player interest. Yet, it’s not without precedent—Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty arrived nearly three years after its debut in September 2023, and Elden Ring’s The Shadow of the Erdtree followed a similar timeline, coming out a little over two years later in June 2024. While Hogwarts Legacy’s rumored DLC might not captivate like it could have earlier on, there remains a glimmer of hope among the fanbase.
When it comes to post-launch content, Avalanche hasn’t really expanded much on Hogwarts Legacy. While the open-world exploration component remains appealing, the standout areas are largely confined to the castle and Hogsmeade, which tend to feel a bit repetitive over time. The storyline itself has faced criticism for being somewhat short and predictable.
Had the DLC been rolled out sooner, it might have served as a perfect remedy, keeping the player community engaged for a longer spell. In a market bustling with fresh launches each year, retaining devoted fans is just as crucial as wooing new players. This earlier support might have also bolstered the reception for Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions.
Recently, Hogwarts Legacy’s modding scene got a significant lift thanks to official mod support and a Creator Kit. The modding community was already thriving, and now, with access to developer support and assets, players can look forward to more fan-made quests, characters, and cosmetics. The likelihood of a DLC delivering content players haven’t yet seen or won’t soon through mods seems slim. Given the strong modding environment and the anticipated community-generated content, the buzz around an official DLC or Definitive Edition might not be as strong as it could have been.
That said, there’s still potential for a Hogwarts Legacy DLC to deliver what fans have been yearning for. Avalanche reportedly had an array of ideas that didn’t make it into the final game. These include companion quests, a morality and reputation system, enhanced pet acquisition and breeding mechanics, a multiplayer option, an expansive marshy region on the map, and even Salazar Slytherin’s Chamber of Secrets. Although some mods address these gaps rather well, the extended wait could mean such features will come with noteworthy enhancements. Even early murmurs suggested fans could expect 10–15 hours of new content. Sure, it seems belated, but there might be a reason for this timeline.
With Hogwarts Legacy 2 still a ways off, fans need something to keep them entertained in the interim. The excitement generated by official mod support has rekindled interest, setting the stage for a potential DLC this year. Launching it without prior buildup might have been a misstep, so if its release is indeed set for 2025, Avalanche’s earlier announcements being met positively is a good sign. The Summer Update 2024 didn’t hit the mark for many players, so following up without addressing past shortcomings would have been risky.
In the grand scheme, if a Hogwarts Legacy DLC is indeed in the pipeline, Avalanche should capitalize on its reinforced bond with the gaming community through official mod support. While the prolonged wait isn’t ideal for some fans, ultimately, it’s the quality of the final content that will matter—just like Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has shown.
