Pixelity, a gaming studio out of Korea, has revealed that they’re diving into the world of Neon Genesis Evangelion with an XR game inspired by the iconic anime from the ’90s.
In a blog update, Pixelity shared that they’ve teamed up with Japan’s Studio Khara via a licensing agreement to bring this new XR adventure to life. The game is set to roll out in three parts, drawing from all 26 episodes of the original series. The first chapter is already underway and is eyeing a release date in 2026.
For those who consider themselves die-hard Evangelion enthusiasts (count us in), this news hits a sweet spot. The anime itself marked a turning point for Japanese animation in the ’90s, sparking a wave of influence across countless subsequent series.
Neon Genesis Evangelion’s storyline transports us to the year 2015, years ahead of its actual 1995 air debut. We’re introduced to Shinji Ikari, who becomes a pivotal figure as he pilots the Evangelion—a humanoid mech designed to fend off bizarre entities known as Angels that threaten Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity hasn’t dropped specifics about which platforms the game will land on, it promises an immersive XR experience. Players will have the chance to explore key locations and relive the same timeline and events from the anime, tackling missions and engaging in dynamic battles along the way.
The studio adds an intriguing element: players will get to interact with memorable characters from Evangelion through collaborative gameplay, a feature likely to charm existing fans. Pixelity is touting an action-adventure vibe for this project, aiming to deliver a thrill-loaded experience.
Since its founding in 2017, Pixelity has been crafting VR experiences, with titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018) under their belt. They’re also in the midst of developing two other VR titles, The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
This upcoming Evangelion game marks the first time the series will make an official landing on home VR setups. Back in 2017, Bandai Namco’s supported studio ‘Project i Can’ launched a VR experience dubbed Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, which let four players dive in together. However, that was a limited-time attraction at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan. This latest venture promises to bring the thrill of Evangelion directly to your headset at home.
