Ever dreamed of diving into No Man’s Sky as a dinosaur enthusiast with a life as colorful as dating Jennifer Aniston? Well, today’s the day you get your wish. Developer Hello Games has launched the Relics update, and its standout feature is the chance to gather massive alien fossils.
Earlier this year in January, the Worlds update brought an explosion of new cosmic options, introducing “billions of stars and planets,” including majestic gas giants and whimsical flying squid mothers who might take offense to overly enthusiastic fishing endeavors.
The latest blog post and accompanying video reveal that Relics is all about space paleontology. Think of it as a galactic nod to Ross Geller from Friends, with less of the sandwich meltdowns and more interstellar fossil digging. You’ll have the opportunity to traverse the universe, uncovering “hundreds of unique bones.” The challenge is assembling these in your museum to understand the appearance of these ancient creatures. Could you cheekily rearrange bones in amusing configurations to baffle the NMS’s alien populace? Who knows, it might just pass off as a scientific breakthrough or a prank on the imaginatively named Fartongueians.
However, before you have too much fun with that idea, be wary of the Reanimated Guardians. These intimidating stone behemoths lie among the fossil beds, guarding them fiercely against curious travelers. They’re a bit more mightily built than any past creature with humorous features. You’ll also encounter Living Stone Sentries and Colossal Stone Effigies. The latter stand as monumental reminders of ancient alien societies, keeping a watchful gaze over relic-laden worlds.
On your fossil hunt, you might stumble upon living fossils like Titanic Boneworms and eerie “skeletal fauna” across various planets and some intriguing purple star systems. Fortunately, Space Stations host Fossil Collectors with whom you can trade or sell your crafted exhibits or swap bones for other intriguing fossils. And if you’re feeling culinary, bones can spice up your kitchen experiments too.
Join the Galactic Paleontology Society through the new expedition added by Relics. It offers delightful rewards like a jetpack fashioned from sentient rock, transformative abilities to assume the appearance of a living stone, and even a skeletal animal companion to keep you company.
So, if becoming an intergalactic Ross has been your secret wish, go ahead and dive in. We’d love to hear your thoughts!
