Netflix is giving us another sneak peek at the much-anticipated second season of Squid Game. While some elements feel familiar, there’s plenty that’s fresh and different in this upcoming season.
With just about a month left until Season 2 graces our screens, Netflix has dropped a new trailer. This time, we’re getting glimpses of the intense challenges the fictional competitors are about to face. The chilling game involving that eerie giant robot girl—the one where players must sprint while she isn’t looking or suffer grave consequences—is making a return. Seong Gi-hun, our protagonist, finds himself once more in the thick of it, trying to guide the new batch of players (or at least making an attempt to do so).
There’s a mix of new elements as well, especially games that seem to pit players against each other using X and O symbols. Could this be a subtle critique of how the wealthy class pits the working class against one another? And then there’s a merry-go-round game, which adds another layer to the intrigue. Through it all, Gi-hun appears to be rallying the players towards some form of rebellion to put an end to these deadly games.
Netflix describes the second season with quite a dramatic flair. According to the official synopsis, “Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returns, locked in a tense battle with the shadowy Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). As new games unfold, the stakes grow deadlier, and Gi-hun’s mission to end the games once and for all takes center stage.” It’s uncertain if he’ll succeed or if the ruthless system will continue to claim victims. While Lee is one of the few returning cast members—hardly surprising—a slew of new characters joins him. Among them are a brash young man with purple hair and a mother-son duo. Who’s willing to wager whether they end up on rival teams, marked by X and O?
The wait is almost over, as Season 2 is scheduled to drop on Netflix on December 26.
