Eager to journey back to the ancient Roman Empire with Anno 117: Pax Romana? You might need a durable toga, as you’re being dispatched to the rain-soaked edges of the empire—specifically, the ever-gloomy Albion. The silver lining? You’ll have the chance to customize your ships to your liking.
For those following the Anno series, known for its time-hopping adventures, this year’s pivot is a return to Rome through Anno 117: Pax Romana. Yet, as the latest teaser makes abundantly clear, your Roman adventure will be fleeting.
Ubisoft Mainz, the creative mind behind Anno 117: Pax Romana, initially announced players would engage in two provinces: Latium and Albion. However, judging by this new preview, it seems Latium may just serve as your training ground, while Albion will be the primary focus of your journey.
Creative Director Manuel Reinher paints a picturesque image of Latium before cryptically hinting at a disaster—a second Pompei, perhaps—that will whisk you away to “a place where no civilized Roman dares to tread.”
And where might this ominous land be? Britain, or back in the Roman days, Albion. Those even mildly acquainted with Roman history will recognize the rigors awaiting in Albion. The Roman Empire had its share of trouble managing the region, facing hostile weather, rebellious locals, and its daunting distance from Rome. What trials loom for your fledgling governor? One can only guess.
Yet, you needn’t resort to force to manage Albion’s natives. Reinher mentions the possibility of honoring their traditions, which could lead to a harmonious existence. Who knows, your superior Romans might visit to find you more local than they’d expect.
If handling the Celts seems intimidating, fret not. Anno 117: Pax Romana allows you to design modular ships. Prefer independence from the wind? Add oarsmen, though they’ll occupy space that might otherwise store goods. Fancy a fleet feared on the high seas? Construct some archer towers on deck.
For history enthusiasts, these options surely spark intrigue. However, the trailer remains tight-lipped about a fixed release, offering only a broad 2025. Meanwhile, consider diving into other riveting 4x and grand strategy games to pass the time.
