At their Connect event in September, Meta revealed an exciting collaboration with Microsoft aimed at enabling seamless wireless connections between Windows 11 PCs and Quest headsets. The anticipation has been building since then, and the companies have now announced that we’ll get a sneak peek of this feature in December.
This new functionality is set to elevate the Quest 3 and Quest 3S by allowing them to connect with Windows 11 PCs to create a multi-monitor setup. If you’re familiar with Apple’s Vision Pro and its integration with Mac via the Mac Virtual Display, introduced back in February 2024, you’ll find this concept quite similar.
Microsoft plans to launch this innovation in a public preview sometime in December, targeting users eager to boost their productivity. As Melissa Grant, Microsoft 365’s Senior Director of Product Marketing, explained in a blog post, “Windows in mixed reality brings the full capabilities of Windows 11 to mixed reality headsets, starting with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S. You can access your local Windows PC or Windows 365 Cloud PC from a Quest headset seamlessly, taking just seconds to connect to a private, high-quality, multiple-monitor workstation.”
Back at Connect, Meta gave us a taste of this feature’s advantages, showing how simply glancing at a keyboard could allow instant access to the computer, with the ability to move windows across multiple virtual displays. This marks a noteworthy shift from the traditional Remote Desktop experience that Meta’s own Air Link offers.
While Quest is already celebrated as a standalone VR gaming powerhouse, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisions even broader horizons with enhanced Windows integration. “This is the path to building a general computing platform,” he expressed. “It’s not just about games, although [Quest] excels in that area. You’ll be able to use it for apps, watching videos, and all sorts of activities you’d expect from a versatile computer. Quest is the full package.”
We’ll stay on the lookout for more details about the release, and rest assured, we’ll keep this space updated with the latest information as soon as we know more.
