Matt Forbeck, a New York Times bestselling author and the creative mind behind the Marvel Multiverse RPG, has teamed up with his son Marty to craft an exciting new tabletop adventure set in the Minecraft universe. They’ve announced Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper, now up for pre-orders. This game aims to blend the broad appeal of the beloved online crafting world with a simple yet engaging role-playing rule set.
Despite the buzz, Penguin Random House, the publisher, has kept the game mechanics under wraps, as they often do with pre-orders of major franchise tabletop games. What we do know from the cover is that it involves dice—specifically two six-sided dice—and their listing mentions the inclusion of “four dice” with the gamebook. They’ve also hinted at extras like a “removable character sheet” and a “rules reference” to track your questing progress, tailored for either solo play or with someone acting as the game master—here called “your narrator.”
In this adventure, players find themselves in a secluded village recently attacked by “illagers,” those pesky adversaries from the Minecraft world. They’re no strangers to Forbeck’s work, appearing as the primary foes in his 2020 novel, Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager. In a scenario that would feel right at home in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, you’ll need to uncover and upend the threat coming from the Temple of the Charged Creeper.
Though Minecraft and D&D have joined forces before—take the Lightning Keep adventure for young fans—this particular journey is a unique product of the Forbecks’ imagination. Matt Forbeck’s background in crafting tabletop games and writing novels for big names like D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange—along with his own stories—lends credibility to this release, even if details are scarce. Time will tell how it’s received when it officially launches in July 2025.
You can snag the hardcover edition of Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper now for $20 through the Penguin Random House website.
