In Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll come across these fascinating creatures called dapperwings, part of the unique flying endemic life. Early on, you’ll be tasked with capturing one for the “Samin’s Research Report” side quest. This mission is for the researchers stationed at the Windward Plains base camp and follows on from the “Dareel’s Research Report,” where you had to get your hands on some tracktail lizards.
Our guide is here to walk you through the process of finding and capturing these elusive dapperwings so you can successfully complete the quest.
### Where to Find Dapperwings in Monster Hunter Wilds
To embark on your search for a dapperwing, the best starting point is the verdant stretch of the Scarlet Forest. Specifically, head to the Bower of the Great Tree in Area 7, which also has a pop-up camp location. From there, make your way to Area 6. We managed to spot dapperwings in three different areas there.
Typically, dapperwings can be found congregating in flocks and they often perch on downed logs and branches. We had the most luck spotting them during daytime adventures. If you’re unsure, listen closely for the sounds they make, which are quite similar to everyday birds.
For more success in spotting them, venture east from the map’s “6” marker and keep a lookout for their silhouettes on tree limbs.
### How to Catch a Dapperwing in Monster Hunter Wilds
After locating dapperwings, the next step is to capture them. You’ll want to equip your capture net, which you can find in your item bar or the Essential Items radial menu. If the dapperwings are out of reach, hop onto your Seikret and use the capture net while mounted for that extra bit of height you might need.
Approach the dapperwings slowly, taking care not to startle them into flight. Unlike the tracktail lizards, dapperwings don’t mind you getting somewhat close since they stay up high. Utilize the new rectangle reticle; wait for it to change to a yellow-orange hue as you edge closer, then go ahead and fire.
Remember, when you’re ready to capture, gently press L2/LT instead of the usual square/X combination.
Successfully completing the “Samin’s Research Report” mission will earn you several rewards: ten blue mushrooms, five units of honey, 50 guild points, plus some experience points for both your hunter rank and palico level.
