This Black Friday, some amazing deals are available on AMD Z1 Extreme handhelds, with prices lower than ever before. Notably, the Lenovo Legion Go is now just $472.97, thanks to a hefty $227 discount. This pricing positions it comfortably below the cost of the Steam Deck OLED and significantly cheaper than other contenders like the Asus ROG Ally X, even during the current Black Friday frenzy. Although the Asus ROG Ally X offers only slight performance improvements over similar handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally, the Legion Go sets itself apart with a larger 8.8-inch display and detachable controllers reminiscent of the Nintendo Switch.
With the Lenovo Legion Go, you’re getting one of the best gaming PC handhelds available in this price range. While the Z1 Extreme/Ryzen 7840U/Ryzen 8840U-based handhelds do need a powerful power source or a robust battery bank to outperform the Steam Deck and Deck OLED, having such strong performance on hand is a boon, particularly if you plan to use the device for gaming at home.
It’s really hard to emphasize just how much of a steal the Lenovo Legion Go is at this price. However, a fair assessment wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a few potential drawbacks.
For instance, if you don’t own a desktop setup and plan to use an external GPU dock, you might find better options with the Ally Extreme or Ally X, which offer superior eGPU support. While the Legion Go features dual USB4 support, this isn’t quite as efficient as OCuLink or Asus’ proprietary eGPU connector, meaning high-performance GPUs could be limited by this connection.
Another point to consider is the screen, which is IPS rather than OLED. Since OLED screens are not yet the norm in handhelds, this is more of a trade-off than a downside. Although the Steam Deck OLED boasts better contrast, the IPS display on the Legion Go is still impressive, especially at 8.8 inches compared to the Deck OLED’s 7.4 inches, and it offers a higher resolution and refresh rate (1080p 144Hz vs 800p 90Hz). For gamers who appreciate expansive screen real estate and a more immersive experience, the Legion Go is a compelling choice.
