Three well-known figures in the UK gaming scene have come together to launch a new indie game publishing company, The CoLab. This exciting new venture is helmed by Darren Newnham, Mark Faulkner, and John Lewis. Newnham has a rich history in the industry, having worked with United Label, Fnatic, and Disney Interactive. Faulkner brings experience from his time at Jagex, PlayFusion, and Bossa, while Lewis has an impressive background with Codemasters and Criterion.
The CoLab is kicking off with an intriguing lineup of three games. Players can look forward to Campfire, a cozy and relaxing experience; DeadWire, a thrilling cyberpunk shooter; and Counter Clash, a strategic game that’s sure to test players’ planning skills. The team has also linked up with the charity Safe in Our World to spotlight the importance of mental health support for those working in the gaming industry. They aim to be a beacon of support for indie developers during these challenging times.
Newnham, the CEO, emphasized the need for change in the gaming landscape, saying, “We’re taking a stand for collaboration and team spirit where it’s truly needed.” He pointed out recent issues like widespread layoffs and the practice of prioritizing profit over quality gaming experiences. This has often resulted in games launching unfinished, leaving both developers and players dissatisfied and frustrated.
According to Newnham, The CoLab plans to drive a change by bringing together creative talents, sharing resources, and giving developers the tools they need to succeed in a competitive environment. They aim to ensure that every game creator who partners with them feels like a valued member of the team, nurturing strong relationships and ensuring rewarding outcomes for everyone involved.
