nDreams, the minds behind the arena shooter FRENZIES, have revealed that the game will move out of early access later this year. However, it won’t be arriving on PSVR 2 as initially planned.
In a recent announcement, nDreams shared their enthusiasm, saying, “FRENZIES will remain free-to-play once it exits Early Access! Since launching on Meta Quest, the game has garnered fantastic feedback, and we’re focused on building from this success post-Early Access. While it’s a tough call, we’ve decided to focus our resources on the Meta Quest version, which means no release on PSVR 2 for now. Although this news might disappoint some, we have more PSVR 2 updates in store, so stay tuned!”
FRENZIES, which hit early access on Quest 2 and later devices back in October 2024, delivers a fast-paced, VR-centric arena shooting experience with an array of weapons and game modes, all bundled into a rock-solid package that’s captured many players’ attention.
Fans of PSVR 2 ready to dive into the action might be let down by this decision, but from a developer’s standpoint, the focus seems strategically sound. The past year has seen a notable rise in younger users on Quest, further encouraged by the $300 Quest 3S launch, boosting the popularity of free-to-play content on the platform.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, noted in February that the free-to-play model is becoming more viable for developers. While it won’t completely replace premium apps, both models are expected to thrive together.
Facing an increasingly challenging economic landscape, nDreams appears to be optimizing its efforts by targeting the largest potential audience on the Quest platform. This decision follows some restructuring within the company, which saw the merger of nDreams Studio Orbital with their main studio into the new ‘Compass’ studio after layoffs.
As a major player in the XR gaming space, nDreams has a proven track record with top-tier VR games like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, and Phantom: Covert Ops, illustrating their capacity to create engaging and immersive experiences.
