The French voice actors for Apex Legends have taken a stand, refusing to sign a contract that would allow their voices to be used for AI training.
Pascale Chemin, who brings the character Wraith to life in the French version of the game, took to Twitter with some revelations. She mentioned that a publisher, likely Electronic Arts, had included a clause in their agreements aimed at using their performances to train AI systems. Though neither the game nor the publisher was named outright, all signs suggest it involves Apex Legends and EA.
Additionally, a group of 31 other voice actors involved in the project decided to reject the proposal as well and have communicated their refusal to the publisher through a formal letter.
“If we don’t unite now to ensure that our voices are protected by official contract clauses—not just for us, but for every video game dubbing studio—we’ll never achieve that protection, and it’ll be disastrous,” Chemin expressed, with the translation provided by ResetEra.
“Turning down work isn’t practical, especially today,” she continued. “Many of us hardly find any opportunities at all, and financial struggles are real. Sure, a paycheck would be nice. But here, they’re not just asking for our labor. They’re asking us to surrender our craft to teach the AI that might replace us soon. It’s an invitation to support the very thing we’re against. It’s like we’re being asked to harm ourselves by backing AI.”
