You can dive into this game on your mobile. The mission right now? Keep those pesky kids in check.
Oxenfree holds a special place in my heart. The way it masterfully blends natural, witty dialogue with a spine-tingling, podcast-like story really resonated with me. The narrative unfolds with eerie radio signals, ghostly figures, and the world warping in unexpected ways—all seen through the eyes of some clever teenagers enjoying one last escapade before college. It’s a game I couldn’t stop recommending to people.
Fast forward to 2023, and the sequel drops. But to be honest, I avoided it. I think it was the fear that the sequel couldn’t capture that same magic. Plus, Night School’s follow-up game, Afterparty from 2019, just didn’t hit the right notes for me. However, I decided to shake off my hesitance. Driven by a craving for a strong narrative during a brief holiday and armed only with my Android tablet, I remembered that Oxenfree II was available with my Netflix subscription. And let me tell you—it’s fantastic! Sure, it has its flaws, and some parts of the story don’t entirely make sense (perhaps because of the choices I made—I’m still puzzled by the hostility between the main characters and the teenager Olivia). But once again, it showcases incredible vocal performances and a gripping storyline, even if it bends the reality with radios in a rather unbelievable way. I’m about to reach the finale, and I’m eagerly anticipating how everything will conclude. — John Walker
