About a year back, I embarked on crafting episodes of “3rd Party 64,” focusing on the various Army Men games released on the Nintendo 64. Around that time, The Video Game History Foundation shared a holiday-themed commercial for “Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes,” one of the titles I was delving into.
This led to an engaging conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director of VGHF, about a treasure trove of materials they’d recently acquired from Michael Mendheim, the creative mind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox was brimming with documents related to the development of the Army Men series, causing the scope of my project to broaden considerably. In late summer of 2024, Frank extended an invitation for me to join him on a future episode of “The Video Game History Hour.” This would include a talk with Mendheim, providing even deeper insights into his games.
The episode of “3rd Party 64” features clips from that enlightening interview, alongside research drawn from the documents shared by The Video Game History Foundation. Their invaluable efforts made it possible to explore these games in such depth.
But wait, there’s more!
It quickly became clear that the wealth of information on Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes was too extensive to pack into the initial video. This prompted us to create a second video, highlighting what I considered the nine most fascinating, previously unknown tidbits from this research. You can catch this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
