Apple is taking an unexpected step by integrating its visionOS platform with the open-source Godot game engine. This expansion provides developers with more resources for creating content for Apple’s headset.
Godot stands alongside popular engines like Unity and Unreal, offering tools that simplify the creation of real-time games and applications. What sets Godot apart is its open-source nature, allowing for free use and distribution of games developed with it. Developers can also enhance the engine by contributing their own features and bug fixes.
In a notable decision, Apple plans to integrate visionOS support directly into Godot, enabling developers to craft and distribute Vision Pro content using this platform.
Ricardo Sanchez-Saez, an Apple software engineer, revealed that this integration will unfold in two phases. Initially, it will allow Godot games to function in flat windows on visionOS. The second phase will enable the creation of fully immersive visionOS applications.
Given the open-source framework, incorporating Apple’s changes into the full version of Godot will take some time, and there isn’t a set deadline for when the project will be finished.
Once integrated, Godot will join other platforms like Unity, Unreal Engine, and Apple’s own tools, such as Xcode and Reality Composer Pro, providing a powerful suite for developing Vision Pro applications. Additionally, Godot can be employed to create apps for major VR platforms like Quest and PC VR.
