Animal Company, the free-to-play game available in early access on Quest, has made a significant impact, consistently ranking as one of the highest-earning titles on the platform for several weeks. It’s keeping pace with the perennial favorite Gorilla Tag, an achievement that few expected.
Since its release, Animal Company has achieved something only Another Axiom’s Gorilla Tag has done before—surpassing 100,000 user reviews on Quest. Gorilla Tag reached this milestone first back in March, becoming the most successful game on the platform in terms of both reviews and revenue.
In just a short span of time, Wooster Games’ Animal Company, which combines Gorilla Tag’s signature arm-based movement with survival elements from Lethal Company, has surged past the 100,000 user review mark. This is almost twice the number since the studio reported over 1 million monthly active users last month. This growth has been notably rapid.
Just last month, Animal Company had about 60,000 user reviews on the Horizon Store, while Gorilla Tag had slightly more than 140,000. Within that month, Animal Company saw a significant jump to over 108,000 reviews, whereas Gorilla Tag’s numbers increased by only 6,000.
Data from VRDB, an independent data aggregator, indicates a sharp rise in user reviews starting mid-March. If this trend continues, Animal Company might just overtake Gorilla Tag in popularity, although a few additional metrics will also have to be considered.
Metrics like daily active users (DAU) and monthly active users (MAU) are crucial as well. These are reasons why Gorilla Tag continues to enjoy its top position on Quest, though Animal Company is closely following.
While more users are joining Animal Company, the critical factor is how this translates into ongoing financial growth for the developers. The company has not shared any recent revenue figures since enabling microtransactions in September. However, in a statement to Road to VR last month, Wooster Games disclosed that launching in-app purchases has put the studio in a “strong and healthy position.”
“Since introducing monetization in September, our revenue has consistently grown month after month, more than doubling since December,” the studio mentioned. “The most remarkable aspect is our player base—Animal Company now boasts over 1 million MAU, which is a fourfold increase since December.”
The Quest platform itself is seeing demographic shifts, enhanced by the introduction of the Quest 3S, Meta’s $300 mixed-reality headset. Meta has indicated that with a surge in free-to-play content and a younger audience, revenue from in-app purchases is on the rise, similar to those in Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The main question remains: will this momentum continue to boost sustained engagement and revenue over time? We’re eagerly anticipating when Wooster Games will reveal its revenue details, which will provide insight into the performance of Quest’s top-grossing titles. If it mirrors Gorilla Tag’s figures from last June, the earnings could very well be in the millions.
