Currently holding a 78 Critic Average on OpenCritic, “South of Midnight” has received a blend of feedback. Critics have largely admired its compelling narrative, breathtaking visuals, and enchanting soundtrack, but its gameplay mechanics have sparked some debate.
Many have pointed out that the combat system tends to feel monotonous, with only minor shifts in mechanics and enemy strategies over the 12-hour adventure. Similarly, the platforming elements, while functional and sufficiently enjoyable, have not set any new standards. Yet, there’s an interesting twist with one particular platforming mechanic, but it remains constrained by the game’s overall level design, preventing it from reaching its full potential.
One aspect of the game that introduces something unique is the wall-running mechanic. While wall-running has been a staple in many games since its popularization by titles like 2003’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, “South of Midnight” adds its own creative touch. Players can adjust their vertical path using the right analog stick, allowing more control during a wall-run, a rare feature not often seen in other games where players generally follow a set path.
Despite this innovation, the actual level design doesn’t capitalize on it. Most of the platforming sections maintain the same height, requiring little to no vertical adjustment. Even in the game’s chase sequences, the design seldom demands a change in elevation, especially with the presence of a double-jump option that already augments the wall-run reach. The game could have enhanced this feature’s impact with more strategic level variations, perhaps involving higher platforms or obstructive elements that force players to navigate more dynamically. Unfortunately, this oversight results in the feature being underutilized.
Exploring characters within the game, Crouton, a pint-sized sidekick, frequently shines amid the larger-than-life figures, consistently capturing players’ attention. Meanwhile, the game’s efforts to innovate, although there, feel somewhat stifled by design choices that didn’t fully round out the potential these mechanics promise. Critics agree that with more finely tuned level layouts and varied challenges, “South of Midnight” could have elevated its creative mechanics into something truly memorable.
