AMD has put to rest swirling rumors about the development of a new Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU boasting a hefty 32 GB of memory. Speculation was fueled by a leak on Chiphell suggesting this beefed-up edition would hit the market this year, supposedly categorized under the ‘Gaming’ series rather than the PRO suite of products.
Frank Azor from AMD has stepped forward to squash these rumors directly. Responding to TechPowerUp’s post on social media, he clarified that a 32 GB version of the RX 9070 XT simply isn’t in the cards:
“No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity.” — Frank Azor (@AzorFrank) February 13, 2025
Instead, enthusiasts can expect the Radeon RX 9070 XT to feature 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Considering the GPU’s capabilities, there’s little evidence to suggest that a model with 32 GB would significantly enhance gaming performance. Earlier rumors hinted at the extra memory being targeted at AI applications with gaming as a secondary function, but this notion has now been firmly laid to rest.
So far, AMD has not ventured into the realm of offering 32 GB memory for gaming-focused GPUs, and maintaining this strategy for an upper-mid range GPU like the RX 9070 XT makes practical sense. It’s improbable that AMD will exceed the 16 GB limit within their RDNA 4 lineup, since the RX 9070 XT is expected to crown this series, leveraging the Navi 48 GPU.
Other members of the family, such as the RX 9070 and Navi 44-based models, are anticipated to have lower specs and, consequently, reduced performance. AMD plans to officially unveil the RX 9000 series on February 28th, providing a detailed look at the specifications, pricing, and first-party performance metrics of these GPUs.
Following the reveal, the series is set to hit retail shelves in early March. Around the same period, NVIDIA is projected to release its GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. Previously, Azor indicated that AMD’s 70-class cards are designed to square off against NVIDIA’s equivalent models. Observers are eager to see how the RX 9070 XT or RX 9070 will rival the likes of the RTX 5070 Ti or RX 5070 in performance battles.
