After 31 years of dedicated service, Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios and a passionate advocate for indie games, has decided to part ways with the company.
Throughout his extensive career at PlayStation, Yoshida has been instrumental in the release of an impressive 429 games, with a particular emphasis on independent titles. Stepping into the role of president of SIE Worldwide Studios back in 2008, Yoshida later shifted his focus in 2019, becoming the head of the indies initiative. His commitment to elevating indie games during this period has been nothing short of remarkable.
One quick glance at his Twitter profile reveals just how deeply rooted his dedication to indie games is, as he even highlights Red Candle Games’ “Nine Sols,” which is now heading to PlayStation, in his bio. His love for smaller game developers is palpable, as he often stated on the PlayStation Blog. Yoshida shared that attending events like E3, he would invariably gravitate toward the indie game area, describing his position as head of the indies initiative as a “dream job.”
Yoshida joined PlayStation in February 1993, and his tenure spans back before the launch of the original PlayStation console. With such a lengthy career at one company, it’s no surprise that Yoshida has experienced numerous moments of pride. However, one particular memory stands out: the recognition of the indie classic “Journey.” Reflecting on the moment when “Journey” won the Game of the Year Award, he described it as something truly extraordinary.
Delivered digitally via PlayStation Network, “Journey” was a small game—one that players could complete in just a few hours. Yet, this unassuming title triumphed over AAA giants to claim Game of the Year. Yoshida recalled how Jenova Chen, the game’s creator, shared a moving story about a girl who wrote to him after the loss of her father. Playing “Journey” had helped her process her grief. This poignant moment left a lasting impact on everyone present, celebrating the profound influence a modest game can wield on people’s lives.
Although Yoshida has yet to reveal his next steps, it’s safe to say that his passion for indie games will continue to shine brightly wherever he goes.
