Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently shared some challenging news about the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. The demand has been overwhelming, and despite their best efforts, the company is struggling to keep up.
They launched a lottery system for pre-orders in Japan, hoping to manage interest in their new portable console. However, over 2.2 million hopeful customers applied, leaving Nintendo unable to fulfill all the requests through their My Nintendo Store.
Furukawa explained they had prepared by acquiring components early to meet consumer needs. Still, the volume of applications far exceeded their forecasts, meaning many won’t secure their console when the lottery results are announced.
For those lottery participants who aren’t selected initially, Furukawa assured that they’ll automatically roll into a second chance drawing, sparing them the hassle of applying again. Nevertheless, even with a second draw, not everyone will be satisfied due to limited stock.
The president emphasized that they are working on expanding production and distribution processes. Starting tomorrow, interested buyers can place pre-orders at physical and online gaming stores throughout Japan. Each store will provide specific instructions.
Additionally, Furukawa mentioned that My Nintendo Store sales will continue beyond the release date, with more details to come. Nintendo plans to increase production to get the new console into as many hands as possible. Although meeting everyone’s expectations is taking longer than anticipated, he hopes customers will be patient and understanding.
Mark your calendars: the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit shelves worldwide on June 5, 2025, with the following price tags—£395.99 in the UK, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the US.
