This week has been jam-packed with intriguing updates from giants like Apple, Meta, Google, and Valve. If you’re as curious as I am, stick around till the end—there might even be a chance to snag some keys for an exciting mixed reality game. Also, don’t miss my piece on the XR scene in China and my upcoming journey to Shanghai!
Headlines This Week
First up, the question of US tariffs on XR headsets is still a hot topic with rapid updates. Many companies seem to be holding back, waiting for a clearer picture before making business decisions. Some have stepped forward—both Pimax and BigScreen announced they’re committed to reducing the financial hit on users. BigScreen plans to fully absorb any costs, while Pimax will only implement a modest regional surcharge for American buyers. In a market sensitive to pricing, this is encouraging news, especially with signals pointing to possible tariff exemptions for XR headsets. However, we should stay cautiously optimistic until there’s official confirmation that these devices are completely exempt.
Switching gears to Apple, rumors are swirling again. While the company finally put an end to persistent speculation with the release of the Vision Pro, gossip has now shifted towards the Vision Pro 2. A Chinese publication suggests that production of certain components has already begun. Meanwhile, tech insider Mark Gurman reports that Apple may be crafting not just one but two headsets—a Vision Pro upgrade with better processing power and a lighter price tag, plus a Mac-compatible device for a larger virtual display. Most fascinating is the possibility, according to Gurman, that Apple’s CEO is laser-focused on launching AR glasses before Meta does.
Meanwhile, Valve is reportedly advancing in the production of its anticipated Deckard headset. Import records hint at Valve gearing up to manufacture critical parts, like facial interfaces, domestically. This implies Deckard could soon hit the shelves, especially with the frequency of leaks and reports bubbling up.
On the collaboration front, Google and Samsung are in cahoots over a new batch of Android XR devices, including a mixed reality headset and XR glasses. While initial plans hinted at an earlier release, a new timeline points to a 2026 launch for enhanced models, offering features such as display screens and camera integration.
In a surprising twist, AltspaceVR is making a comeback. Reddit user Danny McLellan announced he’s rebooting the defunct platform, starting from scratch with an open-source framework. While exciting, details remain sparse, leaving us all eager for more updates and insights into this revival.
More Notable Developments
Meta’s VR entertainment package has taken off after a successful stint with Lufthansa, and they’re set to roll it out across additional airlines. Kudos to the team as they bagged the APEX Award for their efforts. In other news, don’t count on Varjo reentering the consumer space anytime soon—they’re thriving in the enterprise sector.
Pico has introduced a new waist tracker promising improved full-body tracking. Researchers are also drawing attention with the XR TEXT Trove, an extensive repository cataloging over 170 text entry methods for XR. Unfortunately, the latest software update prohibits uninstalling Meta’s Horizon Worlds, much to users’ chagrin.
As the season changes, Meta is also slashing prices on its Quest 3S headsets. Grab the deal before it wraps up on April 26th. But one wonders, despite the claimed success, why the sudden markdown?

A questionable ‘Microsoft Flight Simulator’ knockoff topping European and US download charts, adding a bit of humor to the scene.
Critical Opinions
‘Beatable’ is making waves with its immersive haptic-driven experience. ‘The Midnight Walk’ impresses with its artistry, while ‘Train Sim World VR’ strikes a balance between realism and accessibility.
