Absolute Drift and Art of Rally developer Funselektor, along with Strelka Games, unveiled their latest creation, “Over the Hill,” at the Triple-i Initiative indie showcase today. The new offroading game captivated audiences with its very first gameplay trailer.
Originally announced in January, “Over the Hill” showcases Funselektor’s distinctive minimalist art style, reminiscent of their previous hits, in a setting that reminds fans of “SnowRunner.” However, this time, the game promises a simpler experience without the complexities of attaching trailers to vehicles—though the team clearly enjoys playing around with game trailers.
The trailer builds excitement with the news that the game has already garnered over 200,000 wishlists on Steam. Yet, the developers have kept the release date under wraps. Fans can expect plenty of muddy challenges and winching fun, all without the steep costs associated with maintaining a Land Rover.
The game invites players to take the wheel of classic off-road vehicles from the 1960s to the 1980s, with the option to bring along up to three friends for the adventure. Funselektor stays true to its love for retro motoring while offering varied terrains and seasonal weather conditions to navigate.
In terms of user interface, the game opts for simplicity, with a mini-map that might remind some players of those traditional maps spread across dashboards during family road trips. The winching mechanics, demonstrated from the driver’s viewpoint, will feel familiar to anyone who’s enjoyed titles like “SnowRunner,” as players select a point and pull their vehicle free.
Customization options allow players to prepare their vehicles for intense off-road action, while a photo mode offers the chance to capture memorable moments, whether reaching the summit of a mountain or hilariously tumbling down one after an unexpected slip.
