An industry insider has sparked excitement among fans with the revelation that Final Fantasy 7 Remake might soon be making its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2. Reportedly, another installment in the Final Fantasy franchise is also geared up for release on Nintendo’s much-anticipated console.
The journey of Final Fantasy 7 Remake began on the PS4 back in April 2020. A souped-up version, named Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, hit the PS5 in June 2021, before finally finding its way to PCs by December of the same year.
Recently, renowned leaker NateTheHate shared insights during a podcast episode, hinting that the beloved JRPG is being prepared for the Switch 2. Alongside this news, he mentioned that Rebirth, the second game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake series, is also destined for Nintendo’s forthcoming console.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth Eyeing Xbox Launch
In a broader strategic move, Square Enix is reportedly pushing for a multi-platform distribution for both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth. This follows the company’s announcement in May 2024 to expand its reach. The titles are also expected to arrive on the Xbox Series X/S, with fans seeing Final Fantasy 7 Remake possibly in 2025 and Rebirth in 2026. NateTheHate did not detail when these Switch 2 versions would drop, yet they might align with the Xbox scheduling. It’s also possible that the series’ third installment could go multi-platform, but not immediately, as Sony has secured rights for an exclusive initial release.
Confusion looms over when these new versions might officially be revealed. NateTheHate speculated that announcements could surface at the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct. However, any confirmations for the Switch 2 would have to wait until Nintendo officially announces the console, which they have promised before their fiscal year concludes on March 31, 2024. Although mainline Final Fantasy entries have not traditionally been Switch fixtures, Nintendo’s console does host 16 Final Fantasy titles ranging from FF15 Pocket Edition HD in 2018 to the Pixel Remaster collection released in 2023.
