A seasoned industry analyst has shared some intriguing insights: if Nintendo’s Switch 2 hits the shelves in the first half of 2025, it might find itself trailing behind the PlayStation 5 in terms of sales in the United States. Mat Piscatella from Circana also forecasts that an enormous initial demand will likely cause supply shortages for Nintendo’s eagerly-awaited new console.
### Can the PS5 Outpace Switch 2 Sales in the US if Demand is Met?
Piscatella didn’t dive deep into the reasons behind his belief that the PS5 would outshine the Switch 2 within its inaugural year, other than the anticipated supply challenges and possibly a late 2025 release for Nintendo’s offering. It leaves one to speculate: if Nintendo manages to sidestep these hardware constraints, could the Switch 2 make a bigger splash?
Nevertheless, it’s quite a daring forecast, especially with the PS5 already well into its life cycle. However, given the anticipation surrounding a potential Grand Theft Auto 6 release this year, we might see a substantial boost in demand for Sony’s console.
As shared on Bluesky, Piscatella noted, “I’m predicting that Nintendo’s upcoming hardware will move about 4.3 million units in the US by the end of 2025 (assuming it launches in the first half of the year), which would make up roughly a third of all video game console sales for that period (excluding PC portables). Of course, the actual sales will hinge on manufacturing capabilities. Despite that, I still anticipate that the PlayStation 5 will lead in total hardware sales across the US by year’s end.”
