Devolver Digital has once again embraced its quirky side, presenting the Devolver Delayed Awards — a tongue-in-cheek “awards” show giving a nod to three of its games being postponed until 2025.
In true Devolver fashion, the event was drenched in their trademark wit and sarcasm. The publisher didn’t hold back in applauding its developers for showing the “courage and determination to delay their games into the next fiscal year.” Let’s dive into the award categories and the amusingly fake nominees:
– Best Inadvertent Tripping Simulator
– Best Late-Stage Capitalism Roguelite
– Best Glass Demon in a Leading Role
Beyond the playful award categories featuring fictional games (I have to admit, I’d be keen to try out Windshield Repair Simulator), the show included heartfelt messages from developers whose games genuinely have been delayed, now penciled in for a 2025 release. By the way, shoutout to Sam Eng from Skate Story; he suffered a broken arm, so anyone griping about that game’s delay might want to ease off.
This isn’t Devolver’s first comedic move. Back in 2023, they did something similar, poking fun at the Nintendo Direct format with their Devolver Delayed Showcase. That one humorously announced hold-ups for titles like The Plucky Squire, Stick It to the Stickman, Anger Foot, Pepper Grinder, and yes, Skate Story.
While these kinds of hitches might be tough from a business standpoint, it’s refreshing to see Devolver giving developers the breathing room to fully realize their visions instead of hustling to release half-baked products.
According to Devolver Digital’s website, there are several other titles like Possessor(s), Tenjutsu, Human Fall Flat 2, and Forestrike waiting for their release dates to be announced.
