Showtime is once again diving into the world of Dexter with a fresh angle—a prequel series titled Dexter: Original Sin. The buzz about it reached a new height with the release of its first trailer.
Even though Dexter concluded more than ten years ago, in today’s era of revamps and intellectual property fanfare, there’s a concerted effort to rekindle the allure of this once-beloved series. Last year, we saw the debut of Dexter: New Blood, serving as a sequel set a decade after the original series wrapped up. Now, Paramount and Showtime have unveiled the first glimpse of this upcoming prequel—Dexter: Original Sin. Be warned, there are spoilers from the end of New Blood ahead, as the prequel intriguingly ties itself to the sequel. Consider yourself alerted!
In the trailer, scattered with clips from New Blood’s finale, we see Dexter sprawled in the snow, blood oozing from the wound inflicted by his son, Harrison. As he receives treatment, we dive into the past, setting the stage for this prequel narrative. According to a summary, “Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin paints the journey of a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) evolving from a student to a vengeance-fueled killer. Compelled by his dark desires, Dexter’s journey to harness his sinister side begins.”
There’s a bit more under the hood, too. Dexter’s father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater, mentors him on devising a Code tailored to ensure he takes out only those who are truly deserving of a grim fate—all while staying out of law enforcement’s crosshairs. This is especially tricky for a young Dexter, who’s just diving into a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Fans will be delighted to hear Michael C. Hall lending his voice as a narrator, and in a surprise twist, Sarah Michelle Gellar makes a guest appearance. While nothing too catastrophic can happen to Dexter—as he’s still around in the original series—there’s plenty of fun and thrill to anticipate.
The show may even pique our curiosity about Dexter’s fate at New Blood’s conclusion, leading up to the sequel series titled Resurrection. Who knows? The prequel might just end with him waking up starkly alive. All these questions and more will be answered when the series premieres on December 13 on Paramount+. So, hold onto your seats; there’s plenty of Dexter to unfold.
